Doctoral Students For the first two years, students are generally supported via fellowships or teaching assistantships.
Fellowships
- University Fellows Program is the flagship program offered by the University of Arizona Graduate Center. The program is a fellowship offered to the University's top incoming students doctoral and masters’ students. This program currently supports one statistics student.
- Graduate College Fellowships. The Graduate College provides full funding for two students in addition to some supplementary or summer funding.
- Other funding. Each year many of the Statistics Graduate Students are funded through Research Assistantships with the source of the funding being many different departments and grants.
- We have some opportunities for underrepresented groups.
Applicants interested in either the University Fellow Program or the Medical College Fellowships should provide the information necessary in their statement of purpose so that the Program’s Recruitment and Admissions Committee can submit a nomination.
Teaching Assistantships
- Mathematics Department. Graduate teaching assistants in the Mathematics Department typically teach their own course. The department is a national leader in curriculum reform and is constantly developing new courses and new approaches to teaching the standard ones. Thus graduate students are an integral part of an exciting teaching environment.
- Think Tank provides a number of student support services, including tutoring. Statistics typically has a student who works as a Think Tank teaching assistants.
Advanced students receive funding from a variety of sources both off and on campus.
- Research Assistantships. Recent sources of funding has come from investigators in the Colleges of Science, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Medicine, and Law as well as the CyVerse Collective
- National Institute of Health funded traineeship "Computational and Mathematical Modeling of Biomedical Systems." provides fellowships for graduate students working at the interface of the mathematical and the biological and biomedical sciences. The trainees join a campus-wide community of faculty and students carrying out research in quantitative biology. The traineeship currently support a Statistics graduate student.
- Industrial Internships.
The School of Mathematical Sciences in conjunction with its External Advisory Board is presently undertaking a program that will bring more industrial internships for our students, both for the academic year and for the summer.
Masters’ Students While we prioritize the funding of doctoral students, the need for statistics is very high and we have been routinely able to provide financial support several second year Masters’ Degree students in the form of tuition scholarships, fellowship support, and teaching assistantships.
Certificate Students do not typically receive financial support. However, those contemplating a Masters’ degree in Statistics can begin their graduate training as an online certificate student, with tuition equal to Arizona’s in-state tuition regardless of residency status. Indeed, the course can be taken from nearly anywhere in the world. In this way, students can continue their work life, sometime with tuition support from their employer. Students highly successful in the Online or In-Person Certificate Program can apply to transfer to the Masters’ Degree Program and complete the Masters’ Degree with a single year in residency. This approach results in considerable savings over a two-year residency.
